Makridakis’ village found

Today I had another great result from the Facebook community. I had recently placed a message in an Elounda Facebook group asking whether anyone knew the location of Makridakis village. You may recall from episode 2, he leaves his village to travel to Elounda to kill Hebden for causing the death of his son during the war.

The two boys run down the road, past an archway on the left. On the right is Petros Raptis, the location manager for the serial, playing the villager who overheard Hebden talking about fighting with the Andartes of Vraskas during the war.

They run towards this house, from which Makridakis leaves to travel to Elounda. In the background there is a distinctive looking pair of mountains beside each other.

The mountains are more visible in this shot of Makridakis passing the Policeman, who realises what’s going on and goes to call the Major.

Yiannis Psillos commented on a photo and mentioned that this location was reminiscent of a village called Ta Lenika, 3-4km south of Elounda.

Today I received another message from Manolis from the ‘Traditional Cafe Mochianos’, who said that this village is Ta Lenika and sent me some Google Street View photos to confirm, and I’m glad to say he’s 100% correct.

Makridakis’ house and the mountain behind it look to line up properly:

You can see that the house has been re-clad or rebuilt slightly although the general shape and window location are the same. The house next to it has been demolished, as well as the building where the arch was. The upper floor extension now partially obscures the mountain behind it.

Interestingly, Manolis also mentioned that he knew the name of the man who played Makridakis. His name was Stelios Makrakis. Manolis knew Stelios’ son and knows his grandson Michalis, who is still alive to this day.
